The A27
BREAKDOWN RECOVERY ON THE A27, AND WHY IT IS ITS OWN PROBLEM.
Most Worthing recovery calls are the A27, and the A27 is not like the A24.
It is a road that changes character every couple of miles. Dual carriageway at Findon and Lancing, then roundabouts, then single carriageway with junctions and central reservations. There is very little consistent hard shoulder, which means a vehicle that stops in the wrong section is not on a verge, it is in a live lane with traffic coming round a bend at it. That is the situation where what you actually need is somebody who knows which junction to come in at, not somebody who is following a postcode.
Grove Lodge and the Lancing stretch are the two we hear about most, and both of them back up hard the moment anything is blocking a lane, which is why we would rather come over the downs and drop onto the A27 near you than approach along it.
The seafront and the town centre are the other half of the picture and they are a completely different job. Narrow streets, parked cars both sides, residents’ bays, and low cars that would ground on a standard ramp. That is a job for low ramps and a driver who will spend two minutes working out where the truck can actually sit before reversing into a road he cannot get out of.
